How to manage multiple children
Although families nowadays are becoming smaller it is still common for families to have more than one child. These families often seek babysitters to help them take a break from their hectic family life. But how do you take care of multiple children at the same time?
Working as a babysitter is the best job in the world: you manage your hours independently and you have the opportunity to earn money by working for as many hours as you are available. Furthermore, it is the type of work in which you don't need too much experience. However, given that you are dealing with young children, it is important to be patient and responsible, not just creative and playful; especially when taking care of two children or more. Whether this is your first experience or not, don't worry! Here are some tips to help you manage more than one child at the same time:
1. PREPARE ACTIVITIES
Choose activities that allow you to control the situation, such as coloring or reading a book. Even cooking could be an idea: you could create fun shapes with fruit and vegetables or allow for some creativity with fantastic DIYs.
2. CLARIFY IN ADVANCE WITH THE FAMILY
Before working as a babysitter it is essential to be aware of the house rules. Ask the parents to prepare a possible to do and not-to-do list. Be sure to also ask what the main disputes the children sometimes have; it is normal for siblings to fight, but it is good to be prepared for this.
3. DEDICATE ATTENTION TO ALL
Don't have preferences because nobody likes to feel excluded. For example, if they fight, try to be impartial and face the situation by taking them aside first, then you can bring them together to try and resolve the quarrel through dialogue.
4. DO NOT OFFER TOO MANY EXTRA SERVICES
Since you have to look after more than one child, your level of attention must at least double. The only extra activity you should offer is homework, but be sure to dedicate the same amount of time to both. If one finishes earlier, keep them busy with coloring sheets or prepare a quick snack.
5. DEFINE THE RATE
This obviously changes depending on how many children you need to babysit. Your efforts are doubled even if the amount of time is the same, so it's important to ask for a little more than you usual. Thanks to these tips we hope your babysitting experience will be easier!
